Safety and Compliance of Adhesive Labels in Food Packaging

Adhesive labels play an important role in identifying, explaining, and promoting food packaging. Its safety and compliance are not only related to consumer rights, but also important aspects that cannot be ignored in the food industry.

In terms of material selection, labels that come into direct contact with food require materials to comply with FDA certification in the United States to ensure non-toxic and harmless properties. Although the labeling requirements for indirect contact with food are relatively low, they still need to comply with national standards. Paper and film materials are the main surface materials for adhesive labels, among which non-toxic materials such as PE and PP are commonly used for processing food labels.

The safety of printing ink is equally important. Water based ink is most suitable for food label printing due to its non toxicity and absence of heavy metal substances. UV ink contains relatively low levels of harmful substances and is often used for indirect contact in food packaging. However, solvent ink does not meet the safety requirements of food labeling as it requires solvents as carriers.

In addition, the type of adhesive used for self-adhesive labels also needs to be strictly screened. Water soluble and hot melt adhesive materials can be used for food labeling, while solvent adhesives do not meet the requirements for food materials due to their toxicity. During the production process, measures such as maintaining workshop hygiene, avoiding pollution, and adopting automated packaging are also key to ensuring food label safety and compliance.
